Another wintry blast is expected to wallop Stratford and Perth County today, and Environment Canada says it could be the most severe snowfall of the season.
Geoff Coulson, Environment Canada Warning Preparedness Meteorologist, told MyStratfordNow residents can expect a perfect winter mix, starting with 15-25 centimetres of snowfall.Â
“We are expecting it to move into the Stratford area early this afternoon (Feb. 12)…and that snow will continue throughout the evening and overnight hours.”
From there it will taper off into flurry activity on Thursday morning, with a risk of freezing drizzle adding to the mix tomorrow.
“This system is so huge we have warnings right across southern, eastern Ontario and northeastern Ontario, in fact warnings now in place for Quebec and Atlantic Canada, as well as this system keeps moving east during the rest of the week.”
The city and parts of the county were placed under a snowfall warning by Environment Canada early this morning.
The County of Perth also this morning declared a significant weather event, which applies to county roads, but not township or provincial highways.
The county said all non-essential travel throughout the region is strongly discouraged and if citizens must travel, to leave plenty of additional time and give snow plows extra space and distance to operate.
Coulson said the weather system is a change from the usual lake-effect, localized snow bands impacting parts of Ontario.
“This is a large-scale weather system that is going to have impacts across a very broad geographic area.”
Coulson said to exercise caution on the commute and to carefully consider whether travel is necessary. The weather should come back to normal on Friday, but Coulson said we could be getting another wintry blast over the weekend.
