‘Accelerate Action’ for this year’s International Women’s Day in St. Marys

The Town of St. Marys is celebrating International Women’s Day (IWD) with an important event that celebrates women in the community and an initiative that inspires action for change.

Kicking off the weekend, the St. Marys Friendship Centre is holding its annual IWD event on March 7 exploring the theme of Accelerate Action.

It will include speeches from Aileen Burgin on her work with the Super Aging Initiative, Myrna Fisk on the Philanthropic Educational Organization and author Julie Sawchuck on the importance of proactive planning for accessibility and inclusion.

This free event starts at 1 p.m.

You can sign up by calling the town or by visiting their website.

Then on March 8, the St. Marys Public Library will be highlighting its’ Period Pantry by providing complimentary period products to those in need.

Sarah Andrews, CEO at St. Marys Public Library, explains why access to these needed products is essential.

“To us, it’s an equity piece that is here in our library, just like we like to provide access to library materials, programming, it’s also about helping our community.”

This is being done in collaboration with the Huron-Perth Period Poverty Task Force.

This initiative, made possible by a grant from the Shoppers Foundation for Women’s Health, aims to raise awareness about the issue of access to affordable feminine hygiene products.

The library’s Period Pantry is available year-round and can be accessed during its open hours at its location on Church Street.
