It’s an opportunity to listen to the accomplishments of female composers, past and present.
The Stratford Concert Choir is hosting Her Song, a celebration of music by women composers through the ages on March 22.
Sheila Holloway, president of the Stratford Concert Choir, explained the importance of highlighting women in music.
“Often in the past, female composers have gone unnoticed and they were not as prominently acknowledged as male composers.”
She said the concert will have an eclectic mix of music and the diverse program will include music featured from past composers, such as Clara Schuman, Imogene Holst and Alice Parker and current composers, like Kathryn Rose and Sarah Quartel.Â
“I think there is something for everyone in the concert,” said Holloway.
One of the composer’s being highlighted, Stephanie Martin, is an associate professor of music at York University’s School of the Arts, Media, Performance, and Design.
Martin is doing a presentation and Q&A prior to the concert at 6 p.m. on the topic of composing music in today’s age.
The concert starts at 7 p.m. at Avondale United Church in Stratford.
Tickets are $35 in advance or $40 at the door.
They can be purchased at stratfordconcertchoir.org or at Blowes & Stewart Travel Group in Stratford.
