It’s a campaign that aims to reduce deaths and injuries on roads and highways.
OPP West Region’s ‘stay focused’ campaign has led to charges against 146 drivers since March 1, including eight drivers in Perth County.
Under Ontario’s distracted driving law, it’s against the law to use hand-held communications, such as a phone, while driving.
OPP said simply holding a phone or other device while driving is against the law.
You can use a hands-free device (Bluetooth) but only to turn it on and off, or a mounted device for a GPS or phone, as long as it is secure and not moving around while driving
Drivers who violate the province’s distracted driving law face significant penalties.
That includes a fine of $615, three demerit points and license suspension.
Novice drivers face similar fines as well as a 30-day license suspension for a first conviction.
The campaign continues until April 4.
