United Way Perth-Huron’s Social Research and Planning Council is reminding residents about local volunteer tax clinics, while inspiring others to volunteer their expertise.
Up to 12 per cent of Canadians don’t file their taxes and that includes modest income households, who are particularly affected because if they don’t file taxes, they can’t claim the refunds and benefits they are entitled to.Â
Will Wellington, Social Research and Planning Specialist, told MyStratfordNow there is an extensive network of volunteer clinics in Huron County and the local United Way is hoping to emulate that.
“So we are trying to get a similar thing going in Perth County, working with existing clinics or helping to start new clinics where possible.”
Seniors, newcomers, students, and people receiving income from social assistance programs are often eligible for free clinics.
Kristin Crane, Director, Community Impact and Research, said the clinics have been successful and United Way wants to use its profile to raise awareness.
“We encourage anyone who doesn’t normally file taxes, or who may meet the criteria, to use this service.”
