Woodstock bar faces 60-day licence suspension following fatality of patron

A bar in Woodstock could face a 60-day licence suspension following the fatality of a patron.

The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) has issued a notice of proposal to suspend the liquor licence of My Friends Place, an establishment located on Burtch Street.

The proposed suspension follows the commission’s inspection into multiple violations of the Liquor Licence and Control Act, following the death of a patron.

On October 6, 2024, the patron was served 17 beers over a four-hour period and continued being served after appearing visibly intoxicated.

After leaving the bar, the patron fell backwards outside the establishment and hit his head.

He was then transported to the local hospital where he later died.

An individual who had not completed their Smart Serve training was permitted to serve them alcohol.

The commission said they hold “liquor licensees to high standards for the safe and responsible sale of alcohol. It is the responsibility of all licensees to ensure their staff are properly trained to recognize the signs of intoxication.”
