GOJHL playoffs: Chatham upends St. Marys for Western Conference title

Chatham Maroons are the champions of the GOJHL Western Conference after winning Game 7 against the host St. Marys Lincolns 4-3 on Tuesday night.

The Maroons overcame a 2-0 deficit at the Pyramid Recreation Centre with four straight goals and then hung on in the third period to win the Joe Thornton Trophy.

Kyle Morey opened the scoring on the power play for the only goal of the opening period. Luca Spagnolo doubled the lead with a shorthanded marker early in the second.

Jaxen Fortier-Smith, Carter Chadwick, Josh Harding and Conner Hunt, with the game winner, scored for the Maroons.

Owen Kalp scored in the third period for the Lincolns.

Referees called only two penalties in the deciding game.

Gannon Hunter had 30 stops in net for the Maroons while Colby Booth-Housego stopped 27 shots for the Lincolns.

Chatham’s Dylan Richter was named Western Conference playoff MVP.

Chatham will now face the Eastern Conference champions, St. Catharines Falcons, in the Sutherland Cup. The schedule will be announced later this week.
