Some common sense safety reminders about grilling outdoors

With the Victoria Day long weekend quickly approaching, the weather starting to warm up, and barbecues starting to fire up, fire safety is an important topic.

Jess Jorritsma and Shay Herrett, with the Perth East and West Perth Fire Department, emphasize that safety is paramount when cooking outdoors.

“Grilling safety is a big one. We are coming into that time where we are getting our barbecues going and there are a few safety concerns we need to look at and address.”

That includes ensuring connections on your outdoor cooking devices are secure, nothing is leaking and having a qualified professional look after it if you are unsure.

Herritt said positioning is important, ensuring your barbecue is away from any building, railings, trees, and, of course, family members and pets.

“We want to make sure it’s always attended so no one gets hurt.”

It’s always a great idea to keep your barbecue clean to prevent flareups.
