L’Arche Stratford groundbreaking was years in the making

Shovels went into the ground on Wednesday, signifying construction of the new L’Arche Stratford community hub at 426 Brittania St. is officially underway.

This 15,000 sq. ft. fully accessible building will provide eight affordable, independent living suites, activity rooms and a community kitchen.

L’Arche Stratford Executive Director Stephanie Calma told MyStratfordNow an overcast day didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of a big crowd that showed up to offer support.

“This has been a long journey for us. We have been on this path for about 10 years when we started to have the dream of expanding and growing…being supported by so many people was a really amazing time for our community.”

Calma said construction could start next week and they hope to have the project completed by the Fall of 2026.

The facility goes a long way towards helping alleviate the overwhelming need for affordable housing for people with developmental disabilities, officials said.

Funds are being raised through the $6.5 million ‘Be Belong Become’ capital campaign.

A federal Enabling Accessibility Fund, announced yesterday, is contributing nearly $2 million for accessible parking, washrooms, showers and doors.

Officials said raising the entire amount will allow the organization to remain mortgage-free, and continue to raise funds to purchase or build affordable housing.

A small percentage of people with developmental disabilities requiring a supportive living situation are matched with new or existing supports.
