Sunshine and Second Chances Adopt-A-Thon at humane society

The Humane Society of Kitchener Waterloo and Stratford Perth (HSKWSP) is gearing up for what it’s calling a special Sunshine and Second Chances Adopt-a-Thon.

Both HSKWSP centres will open their doors Saturday and Sunday for a walk-in-adoption event, making it easier than ever to welcome a new four-legged family member.

More than 120 animals are in the organization’s care and they are offering $50 off adoption fees for adult dogs.

“Summer is about making memories, and there’s nothing better than sharing those moments with a rescue pet by your side,” said Beverly Matin, marketing and communications coordinator at HSKWSP.

“This event is all about second chances for our animals, and for families ready to welcome a new member.”

The HSKWSP holds the event when there is an increase of animals in its care. Martin added there are several reasons why people make the difficult decision to give up a pet, including financial pressures.

“That’s a big part of the services we offer. We have a pet pantry that is our food bank for people to come and grab supplies they may need for the month, like a bag of food or litter to hold them over. We would much rather help them out than have them surrender their animal.”

Every adoption includes spay/neuter surgery, up-to-date vaccinations, parasite treatment, microchipping, and a starter supply of food.

All family members, including other dogs in the household, must be present for meet-and-greets. The event is taking place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and more information is available at www.kwsphumane.ca.
