The founder of a popular candy company passed away over the weekend.
Rheo Thompson, founder and owner of Rheo Thompson Candies, died in the early morning hours of Saturday at Stratford General Hospital, in his 82nd year.
According to his obituary, Thompson started “crafting confections in the basement of his home” and grew the business into a “beloved Stratford landmark that still stands on Albert Street” in downtown Stratford.
Stratford Mayor Martin Ritsma said Thompson was an astute businessman, with a big heart for his community and often championed the causes of the service clubs he affiliated himself with.
His business became well-known and successful and almost as big a part of the Festival City as the festival itself.
“It’s almost synonymous with the number of things that come to mind when we think Stratford, for sure.”
He eventually sold the business.
Thompson was a member of the Stratford Rotary Club, the local Army, Navy Air Force Veterans Association and was also a member of the Stratford Noon Hour Club.
A celebration of life will take place at a later date.
Memorial donations can be made in his memory to Rotary Respite House (Stratford) through W.G. Young Funeral Home.
