Off to Germany: Locals to compete at world dragon boat championship

A group of athletes are training hard and raising funds for the World Dragon Boat Racing Championships next month in Germany.

Alex Stephens and Everett Weaver, racing out of Stratford, are among eight local juniors headed to Germany to represent Canada at the event July 16-20.

Alex, age 17, went to the 2023 event and has some good advice for Everett, age 14, who will compete at the level for the first time.

“Take it all in. It goes very quickly. We are there for two weeks. But it’s very intense training. You want to make sure that you do have time to enjoy the experience. Not only in another country but with other teammates your age on this level.”

There are more than 36 entries from countries ranging from Argentina to United Arab Emirates.

Everett said the sport is challenging and encourages others to try it out.

Alex agreed, saying anyone can hit the water and give it a go.

“Being on the water and especially racing and competition, that is where people usually get hooked. And it’s also a sport for people of all ages.”

A fundraising spaghetti dinner will be held on Sunday at St Joseph’s Parish Hall.

Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for ages 13 and under.
