Local walking soccer club will continue to grow after financial grant

Don’t let the ‘walking’ part fool you.

The Stratford Sloths Walking Soccer Club are continuing down a path of growth.

A $25,000 provincial grant will help the club invest in outreach, capacity building, community engagement and expand the sport in the city.

Pete Mitchell with the Walking Sloths said a partnership with Destination Stratford and successful grant funding (through Ontario Ministry for Seniors and Accessibility), is an opportunity to showcase the sport.

Mitchell said the additional resources will enable the club to host local and regional tournaments and promote walking soccer to new demographics in the community and beyond.

With three of local players on the Canadian National team, Mitchell said Stratford is well- positioned to play a leadership role in the sport.

The Stratford Sloths are a friendly, volunteer-run group that brings people together through a fun, low-impact way for older adults and everyone to stay active and connected.

Funding will help Stratford Sloths broaden participation, raise awareness, and build the foundation for long-term community impact.

Kylie Wasser, Director of Sport Development & Tourism for Destination Stratford, said the funding is a step toward making inclusive sport more accessible for everyone and the sport has the potential to bring people together, improve quality of life, and create a lasting sense of connection.
