Crossing the street just got safer for residents in Stratford.
On social media today, the city announced they’ve installed two new crossovers to increase pedestrian safety in the community.
The crossovers are located at Waterloo Street at William Street and at McCarthy Road West at Greenwood Drive.
The city says drivers, pedestrians and cyclists all have responsibilities when approaching a pedestrian crossover.
“For drivers, stop behind the yield line when pedestrians want to cross,” said the city.
“Make eye contact so pedestrians see you, and wait until the pedestrian completely crosses the road.”
The city asks pedestrians to push the button if available, wait for traffic to stop both ways, and make eye contact so drivers can see you.
Cyclists must follow the same rules as drivers while riding with traffic, and to dismount and walk your bike across if crossing.
The city adds any driver or cyclist that doesn’t follow these rules may get fined as high as $1,000, with drivers to face four demerit points.
