Some Perth County drivers were sure in a hurry over the Civic long weekend

Forty-five drivers in Perth County were presented with speeding tickets, as part of the West Region OPP’s Civic holiday long weekend traffic campaign.

Another nine seatbelt tickets were handed out by the local detachment from Aug. 1-4.

The campaign annually targets negative driving behaviours that contribute to traffic collision deaths, injuries and property damage, including speeding, failure to wear a seatbelt, distracted driving and impaired driving.

Two drivers in Perth County were charged with impaired driving while one driver was charged with distracted driving.

West Region officers conducted 1,801 traffic stops during the campaign.

Police in west region laid 1,425 charges across the region.

Police also enforced Ontario’s Move Over law, requiring drivers to slow down when approaching emergency vehicles with their emergency lights activated and, on highways/roads with more than one lane, move over a lane if safe to do so.

A total of 19 drivers were charged in the region under the Move Over Law, however, none were charged for that offence in Perth County.

The law is designed to give emergency personnel the safe space they need to assist motorists and conduct other work on the roadside.

West Region police officers laid 625 speeding charges, 148 failure to wear seatbelt charges, 10 distracted driving charges and 47 impaired driving charges.
