The local health unit is reminding you to protect yourself against bug bites after mosquitoes have tested positive for the West Nile Virus in the area.
Huron Perth Public Health says they were collected from traps in Listowel and Mitchell, and are the first positive mosquito findings of the season for the counties.
According to Public Health Ontario, the virus is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito, adding that most people infected by it don’t show symptoms.
So far in Ontario, officials say one confirmed human case of the virus has been reported.
Symptoms include head and body aches, nausea and rashes.
Huron Perth Public Health says of those who show symptoms, “most will experience mild illness, including fever, headache, body aches, nausea, vomiting and rash on chest, stomach or back.”
“About 1 in 150 people infected will get seriously ill, with symptoms like high fever, muscle weakness, vision loss and coma.”
West Nile Virus can also lead to death.
The health unit says symptoms usually develop within two to 15 days after being bitten, with people age 50 plus and those with weaker immune systems the most at risk of getting the virus.
Senior Public Health Inspector Dale Lyttle says people are the most at risk in the late summer months.
“It is important to protect yourself while outdoors when mosquitoes are most active,” said Lyttle.
Tips to protect yourself include using an insect repellent, and removing standing water around your home at least once a week to reduce mosquito breeding grounds.
