City council vote clears the way for new daycare location on Oak Street

Stratford City Council voted unanimously Monday to approve a bylaw amendment that will allow a new daycare in the city with room for 98 children.

The daycare would be added to 225 Oak Street, an existing office building with a clinic and professional space, and could employ 22 to 23 staff members, according to applicant Forster Holdings Inc.

After a public meeting about the space during the summer, Stratford Mayor Martin Ritsma said the lack of available childcare spaces is often a topic of conversation and civic leaders are working towards alleviating the issue.

“Certainly the public is supporting it…and you can think about the impact that will have on young families.”

More than 600 children are on the wait list locally for childcare.

Site alterations could include a fenced outdoor play area, adjustments to the parking
area as well as pick-up and drop-off arrangements, to be addressed through site plan approval.

A report from the applicant said the operator is an experienced daycare provider with other locations.

There are no financial implications to the city.
