The Greater Ontario Junior B Hockey League will become the first official development league of the OHL starting during the 2025-26 season.
The partnership was announced on Tuesday. The OHL said it will prioritize the development of young players and better support their progress “towards the OHL and beyond.”
The junior b loop includes Stratford, St. Marys and Listowel, among 23 teams in southern Ontario, which has already contributed to the development of eventual OHL players through the years, providing opportunities to young players seeking to maximize their potential.
In the announcement, it was noted that the initiative will create a framework that supports the growth and development of OHL prospects, provide a unified approach to training, competition and mentorship, elevate the standard of development for players and ensure a long-term success for athletes, while strengthening the OHL.
OHL Commissioner Bryan Crawford said the new partnership creates a deeper, stronger pipeline for talent both entering the OHL and pursuing goals beyond the OHL.
The GOJHL has been a development destination for eventual OHL stars dating back to the 1990’s and early 2000’s with players that include Soo Greyhounds legends Joe Thornton (St. Thomas Stars, 1994-95) and Jeff Carter (Strathroy Rockets, 2000-01)
GOJHL Commissioner Craig Spada said the numbers speak for themselves as more than 15 players from this past season’s Memorial Cup-winning London Knights started their development in the GOJHL.
“We’re excited to further enhance the player experience and provide even greater opportunities for young athletes to flourish.”
