The Catholic Church’s first millennial saint has been canonized, with a local school board renaming a school in honour of him.
The Huron-Perth Catholic District School Board said last Sunday saw Saint Carlo Acutis, who passed away at 15 years old in 2006, be canonized in Rome.
They said Pope Leo XIV paid tribute to Acutis, where he spoke about how Acutis encountered Jesus and how he “grew up naturally integrating prayer, sport, study, and
charity into his days as a child and young man.”
Board Chair Mary Helen Van Loon said Acutis reminds, encourages, and inspires them in the knowledge of being called to holiness.
“May his life and his example continue to be a guiding light for our online learning center,” said Van Loon.
The board described him as someone who deeply devoted his life to faith, using the Internet to spread miracles and hope to others.
Along with his kindness and humour, Acutis was also known for speaking up against bullying and befriending marginalized students.
With his canonization, the Board announced they’re renaming the Blessed Carlo Acutis Continuing Education School to the Saint Carlo Acutis Continuing Education School.
The virtual school offers After-Hours Co-operative Education and summer school programs.
