Walking soccer: The beautiful game minus all that pesky running

From curious first-timers to former soccer players who would like to give the sport another go, the inaugural Waking Soccer Community Day on Saturday will offer something for all fans of the beautiful game.

A modified version of soccer, walking soccer has taken off in Stratford from humble roots, started with a few players kicking a ball around while adjusting to the slower pace.

Organizers say the fast-growing sport is accessible, low-impact and fun to play.

The community day is a partnership between Stratford Sloths Walking Soccer Club and Destination Stratford, the City of Stratford’s tourism arm, and will include a soccer tournament and feature walking soccer played by kids and adults.

You can also learn proper warm-up, stretching and cool down techniques and meet Canada’s women’s and men’s national team players, including some local players who represent the red and white.

A Stratford team will also take on the women’s and men’s national teams.

The community day runs from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Cowan Field at Festival Hydro Park.
