GOJHL: Warriors start season with a road loss in London

Stratford Warriors had a tough start to their Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League season on the road in London Wednesday night.

The Nationals scored the first three goals of the game and cruised to a 4-1 win at the Western Fair Sports Centre, for their second win of the season.

Kaden Wicklander and Aiden McDonald scored second period power play goals after Ryan Nichols opened the scoring in the first period.

Jonas Schmidt scored with the man advantage in the middle frame for the Warriors before Ayden Doyle cemented the win with an empty netter, with 2:02 left in the game.

Dante Bertolin stopped 40 shots for the Nationals. Connor Davis had 27 saves for the Warriors.

Stratford host Waterloo Siskins on Friday night at the Allman Arena.

The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.

Listowel Cyclones started their season with a 4-1 loss last Sunday to the Elmira Sugar Kings.

Brendan Gerber paced the Sugar Kings with two goals. Benjamin Brunton and Nate Gravelle added singles for Elmira, who led 3-0 in the third period.

Lyndon Cabral scored for the Cyclones on the power play, on a penalty shot.

Also on Friday in the junior B loop, St. Marys Lincolns start their GOJHL season at home at the Pyramid Recreation Centre at 7:30 p.m. while the Cyclones host Sarnia Legionnaires at the Steve Kerr Memorial Centre, also at 7:30 p.m.
