Cops shedding their locks to raise money for kids with cancer

When it comes to police officers helping children with cancer, they are all in.

Perth County OPP and Stratford Police Service are teaming up for their annual Cops for Cancer fundraiser, with a main event set for Keterson Park in Mitchell.

Const. Aaron Mounfield from Stratford police said it takes a community to get behind a big fundraiser and he believes they will have a successful event on Saturday.

“Anything we can do to help kids with cancer, we are onboard a thousand per cent.”

Cops for Cancer will feature police vehicles on display, a BBQ, raffle table, and officers from both police services getting their heads shaved.

The goal is $17,500. All funds raised go to support childhood cancer research and sends kids who have been diagnosed with cancer to camp.

A kickoff was held earlier in September at the The Stonetown Barber Shop in St. Marys with Acting Deputy Chief Mark Taylor of Stratford police and OPP Sgt. Barry Cookson getting their heads shaved.

Mounfield said he was diagnosed with cancer last October, adding officers lost an OPP brother with cancer last weekend. Two members of Stratford Police Service are going through the journey, he said.

Mounfield encourages everyone in the community to stop by on Saturday for the event, which runs from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.
