Annual Smoke Test Day running in St. Marys

The Town of St. Marys wants you to check if the smoke alarms in your residence are working as intended.

Ontario’s annual Test Your Smoke Alarm Day is Sunday, Sept. 28 and residents are reminded of how important alarms are and how they can save lives.

The Town said you’re legally required to have working smoke alarms on every storey of a residence and outside all sleeping areas, with alarms to be installed inside bedrooms for added protection.

Town Fire Chief Phil West said in a fire, “you may have less than 60 seconds to escape safely, and working smoke alarms give you those vital seconds.”

“This day is about turning awareness into action,” said West.

“Test your alarms, talk with your family about escape planning, and make fire safety part of your routine.”

You should check your alarms by pressing the test button monthly, replace the batteries annually, and replace whole alarms every decade or so based on the manufacturer.
