The Multicultural Association of Perth-Huron aims to support the homeless population by providing blankets and sleeping bags.
Association founder and city councillor Geza Wordofa said the idea came after a motion he put forward to city council about the possibility of adding a temporary emergency shelter in the Rotary Complex didn’t pass in September.
“I was very frustrated and not happy,” said Wordofa.
Board members asked Wordofa why he was not doing something to help the homeless problem and suggested sleeping bags and blankets.
Wordofa said with the weather getting colder, and winter soon on the way, there’s no option to find a place for the homeless to stay in at this time.
He added that they aren’t waiting anymore.
“That’s why we, community members, and the church group get together by getting referrals where homeless people are living/staying, and we’ll go to them and give them these items,” said Wordofa.
“Our main goal is to give back to the community.”
Volunteer with the association board Hira Dhariwal said homelessness is a worldwide problem, but it’s important to start addressing the problem locally.
The association has gotten positive reviews from the community for the program, with people donating some items to the group and asking how they can help.
Volunteers are also delivering food to those in need, where people in need call them to ask what type of food they actually need.
Donations of new sleeping bags and blankets can be brought to the Falstaff Family Centre, with monetary donations done via e-transfer or cheque written to the association.
For food, you can donate via gift card.
