More than 170 people celebrated at Community Recognition Awards

The City of Stratford celebrated their annual Community Recognition Awards this week.

Mayor Martin Ritsma said they recognized 171 people that represented Stratford provincially, nationally, and internationally.

“That went from contemporary dance through to climate and planting of trees, in some cases it was in memoriam of an individual that passed away, and had done great work in Special Olympics,” said Ritsma.

“These are individuals from 10 years old to in their 80s.”

The mayor said it’s one of the highest number of recipients recognized by the city.

He added that 450 people attended the event.

“It’s good for that individual to know that other people know the hard work and dedication they put in, and it’s a great opportunity for those individuals and what they have achieved to model for what others can and should be doing,” said Ritsma.

Don Farwell won the Community Leader award for contributing to gardening and environmental projects.

Special Olympics athlete Brian Hanly was posthumously awarded the bowling award in his memory. He died on March 11.
