Lest We Forget: Remembrance Day Ceremonies across the county

Stratford and Perth County residents are getting set to honour veterans and others who have served their country over the years.

Stratford’s Legion Branch 8 said wreaths will be laid by the community at 10 a.m. on Remembrance Day, followed by the ceremony at 10:30 a.m. at the cenotaph.

Veterans, cadets, first responders and dignitaries will parade from Stratford Armoury to the cenotaph. There will be a call to remembrance, singing of the national anthem, and two minutes of silence at 11 a.m.

Stratford Branch 8 President Frank Mathieson said remembering the men and women who served the country pays tribute to all uniformed members of the Canadian Armed Forces.

Residents can place their poppies on the steps of the cenotaph in honour of the fallen soldiers after the service.

The ceremony will be live on Rogers TV, or at Ballinran Entertainment’s Youtube channel.

On Sunday, Stratford Concert Band’s Maple Leaves and Poppies concert is at Avondale United Church from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Stratford Perth Museum will recognize Remembrance Day with banners featuring veterans at Ontario, Downie and Wellington streets, Market Square and along Veterans Drive.

To support the local legion, Zehrs Stratford said all proceeds from people buying six-inch rose plants on Remembrance Day will go directly to the branch.

The Town of St. Marys will begin Remembrance Week with Veterans Decoration Day at the cemetery on 150 Cain Street, where loved ones of veterans will be given complimentary flags to place at their graves, on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.

On Sunday, Legion Branch 236 in St. Marys hots a ceremony and parade starting at 12:30 p.m.

The Remembrance Day ceremony is Nov. 11 at the Town Hall Cenotaph at 10:45 a.m., followed by an exhibit called Between the Lines: Stories & Signals of World War I, at St. Marys Museum.

The exhibit will look at different methods of communications during the war, including letters and postcards sent by St. Marys soldiers.
