Perth-Wellington MP says economy top issue in 2025

John Nater says economic uncertainty was a big worry at the beginning of 2025 and remains top of mind for constituents in Perth-Wellington as the year draws to a close.

Nater says local residents mirror concerns with fellow Canadians about tariffs and Canada-U.S. trade and there is a great deal of uncertainty in where things are going.

That causes problems for families, small businesses, manufacturers, and anyone impacted by Canada-U.S. trade.

Looking ahead to 2026, Nater says the Canada-United States-Mexico agreement (CUSMA) is up for review next year, and there is likely to be review and negotiation.

“So much of what goes back and forth between the U.S. and Canada borders are covered in CUSMA. The challenge is what will and won’t be covered.”

Nater says locally, economic uncertainty has led to taking a second look at decisions, whether as a family, small business or large manufacturer, and putting off spending decisions until the economic pictures becomes clearer.

The MP knows the economy is weighing on constituents when he receives emails in the middle of the night from someone simply trying to plan the week, month or year ahead, with fear and concern and doubt about where the economy will end up.
