Speed limit pilot project for northwest Stratford approved by city council

A pilot project starting this summer will see a speed limit of 40 km/h throughout a northwest portion of the city.

The geographic area includes the city’s two high schools, a public school and a daycare centre.

The area, bound by Huron Street, Mornington Street, O’Loane Avenue and McCarthy Road, includes more than 23 kilometres of local streets and nearly six kilometres of collector streets.

City council voted this week to proceed with the pilot project.

Stratford Mayor Martin Ritsma said the project will allow the city to educate the public before and after and to collect data on speeds in the area.

The study would include resident surveys.

Ritsma said 29 municipalities in the province are engaging in similar projects.

Results will be reported to council, along with recommendations on whether to continue, modify, or expand the 40 km/h pilot program, which will run until fall 2027.
