Easter food drive important for the months ahead at Stratford House of Blessing

Stratford House of Blessing hopes an annual food drive will stock the shelves for months to come.

At the annual Easter Food Drive March 28, volunteers collect much-needed items at Food Basics, Zehrs and No Frills to fill the food bank’s shelves.

House of Blessing Resource Coordinator Aaron Balzer said they hope to raise more than last year when 5,521 pounds were collected.

“We don’t have another food drive until Thanksgiving, so this food drive certainly needs to tide us through the spring and summer season, which tends to be slower seasons for donations,” said Balzer.

Winter weather added on to the struggle clients face with food insecurity, especially for the unhoused.

“It makes it harder for people to maybe get into the food bank, people without cars and reliable transportation would have had a harder time getting here to pick up food.”

Volunteers hand out flyers at the Easter food drive, listing what is needed to customers of all three grocery stores, encouraging them to buy items for the food bank.

Balzer added cash donations are also accepted.

The food drive runs 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
