Two Stratford Police service members have been nominated for Hero of the Year awards through their contributions to policing and community.
The Police Association of Ontario said Const. Darren Fischer and Crime Analyst Katie Uniac are both nominated for the On-Duty Difference Makers Award for uniform and civilian, members, respectively.
Fischer said he was surprised.
“I didn’t even know I was nominated until some co-workers around the police station started to mention it to me, and somebody forwarded the web link for me to take a look at,” said Fischer.
“I think I’m humbled by the nomination, and just very grateful that somebody would want to nominate me for this award.”
The On-Duty Difference Maker (uniform) award is given to officers who go above and beyond while on duty.
According to the Police Association of Ontario website, Fischer is nominated for taking on multiple responsibilities in his role, including being part of the community resource unit, serving as the service’s media officer, fitness instructor, secondary facility dog handler, and member of the recruiting team.
Fischer said for somebody to recognize the work he’s doing is making a positive impact is humbling.
The On-Duty Difference Maker (Civilian) award goes to those exceeding daily expectations.
The association said Uniac is nominated for putting in extra time and effort to ensure the work gets done right and that others are supported.
Fischer said Uniac provides a lot of background support to him and others in Stratford police.
Uniac said she’s honoured to recieve this nomination.
The association’s awards committee is reviewing nominations this month, and the winners will be announced May 28.
