A documentary that shows how women and girls contributed to the war effort

It is a film that recounts the story of ‘remarkable young women’ ensuring critical food production during uncertain time.

That’s according to the Town of St. Marys, noting the documentary reveals the forgotten story of the Ontario Farm Service Force.

The force put 40,000 volunteer teenage girls, know as the Farmerettes, to work between 1941 and 1952.

St. Marys Museum and friends of the museum are showing We Lend a Hand: The Forgotten Story of the Ontario Farmerettes May 21 at 7 p.m. at the Pyramid Recreation Centre.

“This documentary shows how women and girls contributed to the war effort on the home front,” said Emily Taylor, museum curator and archivist.

“They persevered through immense hardships, yet their stories aren’t widely shared. We Lend a Hand helps put them in the spotlight.”

A Q&A session will be held after the screening with the filmmakers and there is a chance to get autographed copies of different books.

Tickets are $20 and are available at the museum.
