Youth taken to hospital after consuming cannabis gummy

A 10-year-old child that ate a cannabis gummy found on a floor in St. Marys was taken to hospital.

Stratford police said the youth was at the Pyramid Recreation Centre after school program on Monday and found the gummy inside the entrance, according to video surveillance.

The youth became ill and required medical attention. Parents were contacted and the youth was taken to hospital. It was confirmed that THC was present in the youth’s blood. The youth was treated and released into the care of family.

Stratford police encourage parents to talk to their children about the importance of not consuming unknown items. Although legal for individuals over the age of 19, they said it is important to handle and transport cannabis items carefully.

Police said many cannabis edibles have a similar appearance to many popular candies and can be dangerous to youth and other vulnerable members of the population.
