Huron Perth Catholic District School Board congratulates new Bishop of London

Huron Perth Catholic District School Board is celebrating the first new Bishop of London, Ontario in two decades.

Officials said Poe Leo XIV recently appointed Daniel Miehm to the role of Bishop of the Diocese in the forest city, succeeding Bishop Ronald Fabbro.

On the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops website, a diocesan bishop is described as the chief teacher, sanctifier, and shepherd of God’s people, with most Bishops given a diocese to govern spiritually.

A diocese is a family of parishes and ministries, according to the Anglican Church of Canada website.

The board said Miehm comes to the role with years of experience in Catholic education, which included serving as Bishop of the Diocese of Peterborough since 2017, serving as chair of the Education Commission for the Assembly of Catholic Bishops of Ontario, and serving as as the Bishop liaison to the Ontario Catholic School Trustees’ Association.

Chair of the Board Mary Helen Van Loon said they welcome Miehm to his new role.

“We extend heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to Bishop Fabbro for his faith filled presence, guidance and support of Catholic education that has blessed our system during his tenure.”

Fabbro, who served as Bishop for 24 years, helped provide leadership and spiritual guidance to students, staff and families in both Huron and Perth Counties, according to the school board.

With his appointment, Miehm is the 11th person to date to become Bishop of London.
