TSN senior correspondent Rick Westhead guest speaker at sports culture discussion

It’s a discussion about sports culture, consent and respect.

That’s how Stop Violence Against Women Coordinating Committee of Perth County describes Tackling Sports Culture, an event running at the Burnside Agriplex on May 5.

Stop Violence staff said the event’s goal is to provide awareness, strengthen prevention efforts and promote safer communities for everyone as part of the Sexual Violence Prevention Month campaign.

Held every May, the campaign raises awareness on sexual abuse and support people experiencing sexual violence in Canada, according to the federal government.

Staff added the event features TSN senior correspondent Rick Westhead, author of We Breed Lions: Confronting Canada’s Troubled Hockey Culture.

In its description, the book does a deep dive into the state of hockey in Canada today, which includes a focus on those who have been sexually assaulted by hockey players, and how misogyny and homophobia continue.

They hope to explore what respectful and accountable team environments look like and what people can do to create them.

The free event runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
