Franklin Drive community gardens will continue to grow through new MOU

The City of Stratford has announced it has reached a new, six-month memorandum of understanding with gardeners at 45 Franklin Drive.

It allows them to continue using the city-owned community garden in a safe, inclusive manner.

General oversight will be handled by city staff.

The MOU comes as the city is currently in a public engagement process on how these gardens can be used in a fair, transparent and community-centered way.

According to a media release, the city originally leased the the lands to a garden club for $25/year to operate them, but they found that they didn’t have a proper guiding policy or adequate oversight in place for its operation.

Following concerns on how fair the management of these gardens are, the lease was terminated.

Officials added the public can put in their thoughts to the city throughout the summer.

A proposal is expected to be brought to council sometime this fall.
