Stratford firefighters remind residents about open air burning

Stratford Fire Department are reminding the community that open-air burning, including burning garbage and combustible waste, is not allowed in public spaces.

The FD says these type of fires can lead to injury or death from an uncontrolled fire spread, damage to property, vegetation and infrastructure, exposure to smoke and/or additional products of combustion, and an increased risk to public safety.

A city bylaw regulates the setting of open fires and prohibits it, unless authorized by a permit or approval from the fire chief.

They said the bylaw’s goal is to ensure public safety and protect the environment.

While a recreational fire held in an authorized fire pit or container on private property does not need a permit, it has its own regulations under the bylaw, according to the FD.

If you have concerns about this type of fire, call the non-emergency dispatch line at 519-741-2582.
