The City of Stratford is taking a step forward in determining the future of the Wastewater Pollution Control Plant.
On Monday night, council voted unanimously in favour of moving the plant services to an in-house model starting in 2028, after their contract with the Ontario Clean Water Agency expires.
Moving it in-house would lead to a lesser cost ($24.8 million) over the next decade, and would support infrastructure, energy transition and utility planning, saving the city $2.1 million in the process.
The plant suffered an overpressure event that led to permanent damage on a digester roof and some mixing equipment, according to a management report.
City staff will provide the Ontario Clean Water Agency the chance to submit draft contract renewal terms by July 10, with those terms to be reported to council for the July 27 meeting.
