Ensure you know e-bike rules of the road before you ride

You’re being reminded about the rules of the road if you’re planning on heading out on an e-bike this summer.

West Region OPP says it’s important for riders to recognize that e-bikes, also known as power-assisted bicycles, are subject to Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act.

That means requirements including being equipped with operable pedals, having an electric motor rated at 500 watts or less with a maximum assisted speed of 32 km/h, and having two independent braking systems, must be followed.

The e-bike most also not weigh more than 120 kilograms, including the battery.

Riders must also be at least 16 years of age, wear an approved bicycle or motorcycle helmet and follow the same rules as cyclists.

If you see unsafe or concerning behaviour on the road you should call police.
