City exercise to test emergency plan deemed a success

Emergency responders got to hone their skills through a mock collision.

The City of Stratford held a training exercise called Operation Critical Crossing on Sept. 9 that brought together municipal employees, emergency services and community partners.

Deputy Fire Chief Richard Anderson said it was a test of the emergency response plan.

Staff say the exercise simulated a collision between a tanker truck carrying gasoline and a locomotive with rail cars carrying anhydrous ammonia on the Erie Street crossing near Monteith Avenue.

The collision resulted in injuries, power outages, a gasoline leak and the release of ammonia.

Members of the city’s  emergency control group and many support and advisory staff responded as part of the exercise.
