Today’s the day to test the smoke alarms in your home as part of Ontario’s Test Your Smoke Alarm Day.
The Town of St. Marys says it reminds communities about how alarms help save lives.
Fire Chief Phil West said like any other safety device, they wear out over time and need to be replaced.
“Test your fire alarm and check for yellowing or a manufacture date that’s over 10 years old, if either of these are the case replace them immediately. Taking a few seconds to test your smoke alarms can make all the difference in an emergency.”
Ontario has recorded 77 fire fatalities this year, with 127 fire-related deaths in 2025.
The town’s fire department encourages you to test the alarms at least once a month, change batteries at least once a year and to have alarms put on every storey of a home and outside all sleeping areas.
