Bannon, Theresa

A wonderful and strong lady has left us behind, but heaven is a happier place now that Theresa has arrived!  After a very short illness which she fought strongly, Theresa passed away peacefully on December 3rd, 2014 at Stratford General Hospital with her family by her side.  She was 82. Theresa loved her home and prayed she would be able to live her entire life there.  Her prayers were answered and we will all miss her sitting on the front porch reading her newspaper, waiting for the postman so she could thank him, and watching the neighborhood walk by so she could say hello.  She passed her time in the winter months putting together amazing puzzles and always kept them on the table until we all had a chance to see her accomplishment.  Knitting was also her passion for the church bazaar and now we have one less knitter in this world that still made baby bonnets, sweaters and booties for newborns! Theresa loved her faith and being a member of the Catholic Women’s League for over 55 years. She was seen at many masses throughout the community, sharing her kind spirit and friendship.  Her dearest friend, Helena Partridge, was her partner in crime and they shared this faith and many adventures.  We will be forever grateful to Helena and her husband, Ken.  The bingo hosted by the Knights of Columbus was a night out for Theresa selling tickets at the door. She always looked forward to them and the ‘Knights’ were an important part of her life. We thank them for all the rides, friendships and laughs she had participating in the bingo for the last 28 years!  She was an institution at the bingo and created many friendships as a result. We are sure she will be selling bingo cards in heaven! Theresa is predeceased by her husband, Harold Bannon, who passed away 24 years ago after a lifelong career at Loblaws, and her mother and father, Albert Sr. and Dina Van Herk.  Theresa leaves behind a family that was the love of her life.  She is survived by sons David (Connie) of Stratford, Tom (Debi), or Tommy as many still knows him, of London, daughter Diane Daniel (Brad) of Oakville and special niece Colleen Klingenberg (Ken) of Woodstock.  She is also survived by her brothers and sisters – Sister Wilhelmina of London, John Van Herk (Dora), Albert Van Herk (his companion Judy), both of Mitchell, Bernard Van Herk (Barbara) of Stratford, Arnold Van Herk (Marilyn) and Cathy Van Bussel (Jim) of London, Liz Van Ryswyk (Joe) of Ingersoll, Peter Van Herk’s second wife Donna Van Herk of Mitchell, and close cousins Cory Cox and Nellie Vanderpol.  She is also predeceased by all of Harold’s brothers and sisters and their spouses (Joseph Bannon, Michael Bannon, Frank Bannon, Leonard Bannon, John Bannon, Anna Firth and Rita Cushing) and her brother Peter Van Herk and his wife, Mary, and sister-in-laws Theresa Van Herk and Jenny Van Herk. Grandchildren Dina (Dave Elliott), Cory Bannon, Victoria Daniel, Aidan and Cole Bannon, fondly known as ‘Colee’ and great-grandchild Norah Elliott all have wonderful memories of how special Grandma was to them. Theresa loved them dearly and looked forward to their visits and hugs.   She is also survived by many nieces and nephews across Canada and the US.  Friends and relatives may call at the W. G. Young Funeral Home 430 Huron Street, Stratford on Friday December 5, 2104 from 1-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Parish prayers at 12:45 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, 50 Well Street, Stratford on Saturday December 6, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow at Avondale Cemetery. Thanks to all the doctors and nurses at SGH and Father Bester and Father David for their support. In lieu of flowers and as expressions of sympathy memorial donations may be made to the St. Joseph’s RCC Restoration Fund or Stratford General Hospital Foundation or to the charity of your choice through the funeral home.  (519) 271-7411    www.wgyoungfuneralhome.com
