Listowel woman falls victim to online romance scam

Police are warning people about the dangers of online romance scams.

The OPP says a Listowel woman got in touch with them yesterday to report she’d been conned out of $6,000.

The woman said she’d been communicating with a man online that she’d met through a dating website.

Over the course of a year she developed feelings for the man and sent him money at his request.

The police say that with Valentine’s Day only a week away “Romance and Dating” scams are becoming increasingly more common.

To protect yourself you should always use reputable and legitimate dating sites and never send money or financial information to anyone you don’t know or trust.

If you feel like you’ve been the victim of a fraud you can contact the Anti-Fraud Centre at www.antifraudcentre.ca or by calling 1-888-495-8501.

You can also contact the Perth County OPP Detachment at 1-888-310-1122.
