“Emergency scam” costing Canadians millions

The Perth County OPP says people have been hit hard by the “emergency scam”.

Last year more than $2.4 million was lost to this con across Canada.

The scammer will call the victim, who’s often a senior, and pretend to be a loved one.

They’ll say they need immediate financial help but that it has to be a secret.

The OPP says you need to be wary of any call you get that follows that pattern.

To avoid becoming a victim you need to verify with a family member or trusted friend before sending any money.

If you or someone you know may have been the victim of an ‘emergency’ scam, contact your local police service or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
