Supreme Court says prayer should not be part of municipal council meetings

A ruling from the Supreme Court of Canada may affect Stratford’s city council.

The issue at hand is the prayer before each meeting.

Last Wednesday the court ruled prayers should not be part of municipal council meetings.

That was in connection with a case in Quebec.

Mayor Dan Mathieson says the city is getting a legal opinion before making any changes:

Mayor Mathieson says prayer before meetings here has never been a problem before:

He added that any changes here would have to balance the views of the court and the beliefs of residents.
