Third party investigation into Vandergunst incident released by Cullitons

The Stratford Cullitons have released the third-party investigation into the Mitch Vandergunst issue.  The former Cullitons player was sentenced to a year in prison in February for sexual assault.

London’s Eagle Investigations was hired to figure out who in the organization may have known about the issue and to assess how the team handled it once the conviction became public knowledge.

The investigation concluded that only former Head Coach Phil Westman and a small number of players knew about Vandergunst’s conviction.  It says Westman believed that removing Vandergunst would be convicting him, but that he did not know the player had already been convicted.

The report also says the team worked with the Ontario Hockey Association after everything became public and that the OHA has “no concerns” on how the Cullitons’ Board handled the incident.
