Doris C. Hocking (Brown) of St. Marys passed away peacefully on Monday August 17, 2015 at Hillside Manor. Beloved wife of the late Gordon “Skip” Hocking (2010). Daughter of the late George and Mona Brown of London. Doris was one of six children. She was born and educated in London working in an office before her marriage. On October 18, 1952, she married Gordon and moved to Munro where they farmed for 41 years. They had a dairy herd before retiring in 1993. They sold the farm and moved to St. Marys. Loving mother of three children Jewel and husband Larry Haynes of Kintore and their children Karen, Corporal Dan Haynes, Adam and wife Jessica and Steven Jay Hayes (1977); Lois and husband Doug Bragg and their children Sharon and Steve Garvey, Jeff Bragg and Amanda Price; Ken and wife Shelly Hocking and their children: Andrew, Bill and Katie, Christine Hocking and friend John McLaughlin. Doris enjoyed four great-grandchildren Leeanne Garvey, Wesley and Austin Hocking, and Logan Haynes. Survived by sister Jean Brown of London, and Jean (Hocking) Mitchell of Mitchell. She will be missed by many nieces and nephews. Doris was very active in the community. She joined the Glen Gowrie Women’s Institute in 1956 and held offices and was President in the Centennial Year 1967, she was honoured to be a Life Member. In 1957, she and Gord were charter members of the Shining Star Chapter #293 Order of the Eastern Star, Mitchell. She held offices, especially Organist and served as Worthy Matron with Gord 40 years ago. They both affiliated with St. Marys Chapter #121 in 1991. She was very proud to be a Life Member of the Star – she was a 58 year member.- In 2006, she became a member of the Daughters of the Nile Omar Temple London. Doris has been an active member of her churches: Trinity Anglican, Mitchell, Presbyterian in Mitchell and St. Marys. She was a member of the Ladies Aid and the Friendship Auxiliary. She was predeceased by Doug and Elizabeth Brown, Ed and Lillian Brown, Leonora and Dave Parke, Henry and Eliene Brown, Grace (Hocking) and Leslie Miller and George Mitchell. Mother enjoyed her knitting, crocheting, embroidery, reading, hand stitching and quilting her beautiful quilts that each grandchildren and many others were blessed to receive. We will miss your music Mother for we grew up listening to your play the piano and dad singing. Now you can once again become a musical duo. Visitation at the Andrew L. Hodges Funeral Home, 47 Wellington St. S., St. Marys (519-284-2820) on Tuesday from 2 – 4 & 7 – 9 p.m. The Daughters of the Nile will conduct a service at 5:30 p.m. and the Order of the Eastern Star will conduct a service at 6 p.m. The Funeral Service will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2015, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Gwen Ament officiating. Cremation to follow. Due to severe allergies, instead of flowers, memorial donations would be preferable to the St. Marys Presbyterian Church, Order of the Eastern Star Hospital Fund, or The Daughters of Nile.
