West continues his fight for rail service

Chris West isn’t giving up on his mission for improved passenger rail service.

The movement sparked in large part by the efforts of the St Marys businessman and others in the Stone Town appears to be gaining momentum.

Renowned Canadian artist Robert Bateman is speaking up on the issue.

Specifically, he’s expressing outrage at the potential closure of the Algoma Railway corridor.

Bateman argues the railways boost eco-tourism and are part of Canadian heritage.

Meanwhile, NDP Transport Critic Olivia Chow introduced a private members bill in the House of Commons that would preserve VIA Rail as an essential service for Canadians.

She says this would merely give VIA Rail the same federal legislative protection Amtrak has in the United States.
