North Perth man loses $5,000 to romance scam

A North Perth man has fallen victim to the romance scam.

He got in touch with the OPP over the weekend. The man met a woman from Ghana on the dating site Plenty of Fish.

After building a relationship the woman said she wanted to visit him but needed $5,000 to cover the cost of the trip. The victim sent the money but shortly after realized he’d been duped.

The OPP is once again warning people to be on the lookout for this kind of con. Romance scams were the second most costly in Canada in 2014 with total losses of nearly $14 million.
