PED to savage North American hog market

The hits just keep on coming from the porcine epidemic diarrhea virus.

It is not contagious to humans and it does not impact meat quality but it’s still going to savage North American hog markets over the next two years.

That’s the prediction from Rabobank.

The disease has impacted 60 per cent of the US breeding herd, 28 per cent of the Mexican herd and it’s spreading here in Canada.

The bank predicts an 11 per cent shortfall of market-available hogs due to PED.

There have been 35 confirmed cases in Ontario and the illness has spread to Manitoba, Quebec and PEI.
