NDP calls for investigation into natural gas rate hikes

Ontarians are now four days into paying a whole lot more for natural gas.

Union Gas hiked its rates by 28 per cent on April 1st.

Enbridge raised their rates by 40 per cent.

The Ontario Energy Board approved the hikes last week.

The provincial NDP is calling on the Wynne Government to intervene.

Perth-Wellington candidate Romayne Smith Fullerton says this is one hit ordinary families can’t afford.

Smith Fullerton says the Energy Board is supposed to protect consumers and not rubber stamp requests from the energy companies.

She says the provincial government should not be doing the job of the gas companies.

The New Democrats want to see checks and balances in the future so that massive increases can’t shock consumers like that again.
